Feb 26, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Tigers go 3-0 on this road swing.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis (7-2) men's tennis team grabbed its second 4-3 road win of the weekend with a come from behind win at Harvard (6-6), Sunday.
Harvard jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins at one and three doubles. The win at one from the number 27 ranked Kenny Tao and Brian Yeung was the fifth straight victory for the top Harvard doubles squad, and off-set a 7-6 Memphis win at two doubles to grab the team point.
Harvard pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at six singles, but the match got tight after that. Harvard added a win at three singles, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6, but Memphis stayed close, with Ryan Peniston picking up a 7-5, 6-3 win at one and Andrew Watson adding a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at two. Adding a Chris Patzanovsky 7-6, 6-3 win at four singles, and Memphis had tied the match at three-all.
The clincher came down to the match at five, where freshman Jan Pallares was in a dogfight with Grant Solomon. Solomon won the opening set in a 7-6 tiebreak, and Pallares answered with a 7-6 tiebreak win of his own in the second set. But as the match tightened up, so did Solomon, who began cramping with Pallares up 3-1 in the third. Solomon was unable to finish the match and was forced to default the decider.
After going 3-0 on this road trip, picking up wins at Indiana and Dartmouth, Memphis finally returns home Friday, facing Jackson State at 10 a.m. The Tigers then welcome Cornell to town, Sunday, at 11 a.m.
