Tigers Fall to Late UConn Rally
Feb 16, 2017 | Men's Basketball
HARTFORD, Conn. - Despite leading for over 33 minutes in the game and having four players reach double-figure scoring, the Memphis Tigers were unable to overcome a late 10-0 UConn run over the final five minutes of the game in a 65-62 Huskies' victory.
Markel Crawford and Craig Randall II each scored 13 for the Tigers, while Dedric Lawson scored 12 and Jeremiah Martin 11.
Memphis had three players - Dedric Lawson, K.J. Lawson, and Markel Crawford - pull down seven rebounds, with the Tigers out-rebounding UConn 34-to-26 in the contest. K.J. Lawson dished out a team-high four assists, with Crawford grabbing two steals.
UConn (13-12, 8-5 American Athletic Conference) started the game quickly, jumping out to an 8-3 run before the Tigers got a three-point play from Martin and a three-pointer from Randall to give Memphis its first lead of the game.
Memphis (18-9, 8-6 American) got another lay-in from Dedric Lawson to put the Tigers ahead by three; however, UConn answered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 11. Six straight Memphis points - as two K.J. Lawson free throws were sandwiched by Crawford baskets - gave Memphis a lead it would hold through the remainder of the first half.
After the hosts climbed back to within five with 7:18 to play, the Tigers rattled off nine straight points on a Dedric Lawson three-point-play and two Randall three-pointers to take a 14-point lead. The first-half lead grew to as many as 17 following a Dedric Lawson jumper, before the Huskies cut the deficit to 14 heading into the break at halftime.
In a mirror-image of the first half, UConn started the period strong by scoring eight of the first ten points, cutting the deficit to eight, before Memphis ran off seven straight points capped by a Dedric Lawson three-pointer. UConn kept chipping away at the deficit, closing to within five before the Tigers rallied back for five straight to re-take a double-digit lead with 8:20 to play in the game.
With 4:56 Jeremiah Martin hit a mid-lane floater to put Memphis ahead 60-53; however, that would be the last basket Memphis would score until Jimario Rivers converted on a tip-dunk with a second left on the clock. During that span, UConn ran off 10 straight points to take a lead that it would not give up in the three-point loss.
Memphis made 21-of-51 shots (41.2 percent) in the game, and 6-of-21 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. The Tigers also made 14-of-17 free throw attempts in the contest, including 10-of-11 in the first half.
UConn was led by Jalen Adams who scored a game-high 19 points to go with six assists and two steals. Kentan Facey pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Vance Jackson had three steals.
The Tigers get a week off from competition before returning to action on Thursday, February 23 when the team travels to southwest Ohio to face off against the nationally ranked Cincinnati Bearcats in a 6 p.m. (CT) tip-off on ESPN.
