Women’s Basketball Hosts Southern Illinois Sunday

Memphis looks to improve to 8-1 all-time at home against the Salukis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team returns to action at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Sunday by hosting Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. This is the final game to prepare for the Play4Kay Showdown in Las Vegas, Nev. next week.

Memphis is looking for its second victory this season after falling in the previous two road contests to Little Rock and Louisiana Tech. Senior forward Cheyenne Creighton leads the Tigers through three games with 20.0 points per contest.
Creighton led the Tigers against Louisiana Tech with 11 points while junior transfer Jasmine James registered a career-high 10 points. James also added five rebounds for Memphis. Freshman Jada Stinson knocked down two three-pointers during a 10-0 run against the Lady Techsters. She's currently second on the team with 8.7 points per game.
The Elma Roane Fieldhouse has proven to provide a great home court advantage in its history. All-time at the Fieldhouse, the Tigers are 371-172 with a 1-0 record this season. The last two seasons combined for 23 wins at the Fieldhouse.
Head coach Melissa McFerrin is in her 10th season at the helm of the Tiger program.
A Look At Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois comes to Memphis with a 1-1 overall record with a win against UT Martin in the season opener. The Salukis did, however, fall in their last contest against UAB by a score of 76-66.
To open the year, SIU has four players averaging in double-figures. Kylie Giebelhausen leads the team with 15.5 ppg. Abby Brockmeyer, who is also contributing 13.0 ppg, leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per contest. The Salukis are shooting almost 50 percent from the floor and over 44 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, SIU is averaging 75 points per game.
Southern Illinois is under the direction of head coach Cindy Stein, who is currently in her fifth season as the head coach of the Salukis. In 21 years of coaching, Stein has compiled a 341-273 overall career record.

Memphis and Southern Illinois have faced off 19 times in program history with the Tigers holding a 13-6 overall record. The last six meetings have alternated in who comes out victorious. Southern Illinois won the last match-up on Dec. 11, 2016 by a score of 69-61.
The first meeting against the Salukis was during the 1973-74 season when Memphis won 56-25. The Tigers won the first eight meetings during the 70's and early 80's.
