Men’s Tennis Battles Elements at Notre Dame Invitational
Oct 08, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Voges and Rauch go 3-1 in singles play.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team battled the elements and a stiff field at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational over the weekend. The three-day event gave the Tigers time to get in at least four singles matches apiece, while weather forced the cancellation of Saturday doubles.
Turner Voges and Felix Rauch both carded 3-1 weekends. Voges grabbed wins over opponents from Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana, with his lone loss coming to home-standing Brendon Kempin of Notre Dame, 7-6, 7-6. Rauch picked up wins over opponents from Notre Dame, Indiana and Wisconsin, with his lone loss being a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Guilleromo Cabrera of host Notre Dame.
Matt Story, who had played in the ITA doubles qualifying draw earlier this week was back on the court again at Notre Dame and went 3-2 in singles play. The lone Tiger to play five singles matches, he picked up a win over Marquette's Eddie Greisedieck to start his weekend slate, then got wins over a pair of Michigan State opponents to push to 3-2 after losses to opponents from Wisconsin and Indiana.
Chris Patzanovsky and Shakeel Manji both posted .500 weekends. Patzanovsky picked up wins over opponents from Iowa and Wisconsin, while Manji grabbed wins over foes from Marquette and Michigan State.
The Notre Dame Invitational offered the Tiger roster a chance to see opponents that they may see again in the spring dual calendar. Memphis opens its spring schedule against Indiana, could face Iowa in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend and has a non-conference road swing through Michigan and Michigan State in February.
Next up though will be the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. This year's regional will be the final collegiate fall competition for the men's tennis roster and will be hosted Oct. 19-23rd by the University of Tennessee. The Tigers will wrap up the fall with a weekend in the USTA Future event in Birmingham, Ala.
