Tigers will play first of two Big 12 opponents this weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis takes its 4-1 record to Tulsa, Okla. where it will face Rice and Oklahoma as part of the University of Tulsa Classic this weekend. The Tigers take on the Owls Friday at 5 p.m. before facing the Sooners Sunday at 1 p.m.
"This is a really good group of kids, that are all in and that's all you can ask as a coach," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "They are proving that they have a lot of character and that they compete hard. We are going to have our hands full this weekend. Right now our full focus is on Rice, they have started the season well and they play a good brand of soccer."
With just one match last weekend, a 3-0 win over UMKC, the Tigers should be well-rested heading into this weekend.
Valerie Sanderson has started the season in scintillating form, with five goals and two assists through the first five games. The senior ranks 11th in the NCAA with her one goal per game average. Her two game-winning goals are ranked 14th in the nation.
The Boisbriand, Quebec native, now holds the program record with 10 multiple-goal games in her career. Sanderson stands third in program history with 95 points, while her 41 career goals is just two shy of tying for second in the Memphis record book.
Sophomore Chanel Hudson-Marks scored her first goal of the season in the win over UMKC. She became the fifth different Memphis goal-scorer this season with her third career goal.
Also against the Kangaroos, goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel posted the second shutout of the season and the 20th of her career. With more than 5,900 minutes played she is now second all-time at Memphis in career goalkeeping minutes.
Rice is 2-1-1 this season with wins over regional opponents Houston Baptist and Sam Houston State. The Owls had their season opener at SMU cancelled because of weather.
Oklahoma has a 3-2-1 record heading into the weekend and will play Tulsa to start the weekend tournament. The Sooners started the season against a pair of ranked opponents, tying No. 24 South Carolina and beating No. 25 Loyola Marymount, 4-1. OU jumped out to a 2-0-1 start with a win over rival Oklahoma State.
Memphis will be back at Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host Oklahoma State on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then embark on the longest road swing of the season with three-straight away matches, against UT Martin, Temple and UConn.
