Memphis heads to the northeast for matches against Temple and UConn
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After an 11-day layoff, the University of Memphis women's soccer team will hit the road for its first two matches in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers will play at Temple (3-7), Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (CT) before heading to No. 21 UConn (8-2) to play Sunday at noon (CT).
"This break allowed us to work on a few things that we don't normally get to work on in a regular week and allowed us to get our legs back. We should be fresh," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Right now all focus is on Temple. There are no easy games in this conference and we are going to have our hands full with two road matches."
Memphis (6-2-1) is coming off a 5-0 win over UT Martin, the Tigers' highest scoring output since the 2013 season. Senior forward Valerie Sanderson scored her eighth goal of the season in the win and upped her career goal total to 44, which is second most in Memphis history. Sanderson stands in the top-10 in goals per game and points per game in the NCAA this season.
Temple is 3-7 and has had a lengthy break as well. In the last match, Sept. 20, the Owls' suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Lehigh. Just a few days prior, the team picked up a home win over NJIT, 2-0.
"Temple is a very gritty team and they got us last year. They beat us at home and we haven't forgotten about that. This is a very good conference for women's soccer," Monaghan said.
UConn is the defending regular season champion in the American, posting an 8-1 league record in 2015.
The Huskies completed their non-conference schedule with a 4-1 victory at home against Fordham. Redshirt senior Stephanie Ribeiro tied her career-best five points in a single match with a goal and three assists against the Rams. She currently leads the nation in game-winning goals with six.
UConn started the season outside of the national rankings but jumped into the NSCAA Coaches Poll after week one and have remained ranked since.
Memphis will come back home to play three straight conference matches at Mike Rose Soccer Complex, starting with East Carolina, Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will close out the home stand against Cincinnati, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. and against Tulsa, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
