Tigers Seek To Extend Home Winning Streak Saturday

Memphis is off to its best start at home since 2002
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A six-day break was welcomed by the University of Memphis men's soccer team as it preps to take on Cincinnati to open up conference play Saturday evening. The Tigers host the Bearcats in a 7 p.m. showdown at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Saturday's match is the third of three straight at home. The Tigers won the first two matches on this home stretch with a win against SIU Edwardsville last Wednesday and Houston Baptist last Sunday.
"Coming off of a tough week in San Diego where we took two losses, to rebound, not only with a couple of wins but building confidence, scoring goals, and getting a shutout in that last game gives us confidence toward our first conference game against Cincinnati," said head coach Richard Mulrooney.
The Tigers, who have now scored more goals in 2016 than last season, come into the match Saturday with a 5-3-0 overall record. Memphis has registered 14 goals this season, led by freshman Jackson Morse's three. Ten different players have scored goals for the Tigers, which really evens out the Memphis attack.
Last week against Houston Baptist, Burke Fahling scored his first collegiate goal and earned himself the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors. With an assist and a goal against HBU, Carlos Hurtado was named to the conference's Weekly Honor Roll. Five Tigers have now been recognized by the conference this season.
Memphis will be looking for its first victory against Cincinnati at home since the 1999 season. The last win against the Bearcats was in 2013, but that match was in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati comes into the weekend with a 4-3-0 overall record including wins in the last three matches. All three of those matches were shutouts at home with the most recent one coming against Thomas More on Sept. 20.
With three goals scored, Ryan Melink leads the Bearcats offensively this season. Adam Wilson has tallied a goal and five assists for Cincinnati and Pedro Diaz has seen every minute in goal. Diaz owns a 0.97 goals against average in just under 650 minutes of play. He has saved 32 shots this year and all four of the Bearcat victories have been shutouts.
The Tigers will kick-off against the Bearcats Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Memphis will then hit the road for two matches before returning home on Oct. 8 against UCF. Admission is free for all matches at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and all matches can be viewed on the Memphis Tiger Network.
