Three separate Tigers score in the fourth shutout of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team improved to a perfect 4-0 at home and 5-3 overall with a 3-0 shutout over Houston Baptist Sunday evening. The Tigers used two goals in short succession in the second half to pull away with the victory.
Â
Burke Fahling, Julio Vargas, and Carlos Hurtado all registered goals in the victory.
Â
"I was pleased with it," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "The guys came out and competed for 90 minutes. It took us a little while to get in the flow, but at the end of the day I still think after looking at the tape tomorrow we'll see we were trying to do the right things and that we were rewarded in the second half for the play that we had."
Â
The Tigers jumped out on top in the 35th minute of the contest. Fahling tallied his first career Memphis goal from the right side of the box. David Zalzman served a free kick into a congested box before Fahling sent deflected ball into the lower right 90.
Â
Memphis and Houston Baptist struggled to get offensive opportunities early in the contest. With just five shots in the first 30 minutes of play, Memphis fired six shots to end the first half with momentum.
Â
In the 54th minute, Memphis continued to build upon its lead with a goal by Vargas. Vargas volleyed a ball that bounced in the box after a corner kick by Hurtado.
Â
Just moments later, Hurtado added to his point total for the evening after sending a ball to the upper right corner to make it 3-0 in favor of the Tigers. Josh Burnett and Vargas were credited with assists on Hurtado's goal.
Â
The Tigers finished the match outshooting the Huskies 20-9. Goalkeeper Jake Leeker started the contest for the Tigers and registered six saves. Erik Furseth saw his first bit of time in goal with an appearance in the 77th minute. He helped complete the Memphis shutout.
Â
The Tigers will be off until next Saturday when they open up the American Athletic Conference schedule with a match-up against Cincinnati at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Kick-off against the Bearcats will be at 7 p.m. Admission is always free and a live stream of the game can be viewed on the Memphis Tiger Network.
