Tigers score two goals in final 13 minutes to remain perfect at home
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A goal in the 89th minute by Hector Cantele put the Tigers up for good as the University of Memphis men's soccer team defeated SIU Edwardsville by a score of 2-1 Wednesday evening. The victory improves the Tigers to a perfect 3-0 record at home and 4-3 overall.
"Tonight we went down 1-0 and the guys kept their heads up," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "The experience we have seen this year is starting to kick in. I told the guys it may take all 90 minutes to tie it up or possibly win it."
SIUE struck in the 12th minute of the contest on a quick offensive set. The Cougars served the ball down the right wing where Greg Solawa passed it into Devyn Jambga for the score.
The Tigers bounced back after the half to maintain offensive control for the majority of the period.
With just under 20 minutes to play in the second, the Tigers had a prime opportunity to score. Chandler Klemm played a ball into Raul Gonzalez who saw an open look at goal. Gonzalez's shot was fired right at the SIUE goalkeeper.
In the 77th minute, SIUE committed a handball in the box. Gonzalez was selected to take the penalty kick and he converted to tie the match up at 1-1. It was Gonzalez's first goal of the season as this was his first bit of action this year.
As time was winding down, Memphis created another opportunity in the box. Cantele scored with just 11 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. SIUE tried to counter, but wasted time on serves helped secure the Memphis victory.
The Tigers finished the night with 22 shots while allowing just nine. Junior goalkeeper Jake Leeker recorded seven saves in the victory.
Memphis remains at home this weekend with a Sunday night match against Houston Baptist. Kick-off at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex is slated for 6 p.m. The game can be viewed live on the Memphis Tiger Network.
