Memphis had mixed results last week, picking up a big win over No. 19 Ole Miss before losing to Little Rock.
The Tigers beat the Rebels for the first time since 2011 and jumped out to a 3-0 start to the season. Freshman midfielder Serena Dolan and sophomore forward Marie Levasseur scored the Tigers goals and senior goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel started her 63rd consecutive career match, earning her 33rd win.
Senior forward Valerie Sanderson leads the team with eight points on three goals and two assists. She has had a hand in five of the team's eight goals so far.
"I was very pleased with our effort on Friday night and I thought the hard work is what won us the game. It was an emotional game and a very physical game and then you have to turn around and play 48 hours later," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Sunday we didn't come out with the same mentality we did on Friday night and unfortunately it's a classic case of not being able to bounce back."
UMKC enters the weekend in search of its first win of the season, sitting with a 0-2-2 record on the season. Sophomore forward Kelsey Mothershead scored the Kangaroos' lone goal this season, in a 1-1 draw against Creighton. The 'Roos other draw came in a rain-shortened game in the team's home opener against Missouri State. UMKC dropped games against Omaha and Arkansas.
"After you drop a result, you just can't wait to play again. It's a tough week because of having four or five days before you play the next game. In this short season I think we have learned a lot. What we have told the kids is that if your mentality is right you can play with anybody and beat anybody," said Monaghan.
Memphis will not be in action on Sunday, but the Tigers will be hosting a youth clinic from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., prior to the start of the men's match against Missouri State at 2 p.m.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Tulsa, Okla. to play Rice and Oklahoma as part of the University of Tulsa Classic.
