Chandler Klemm scored for the Tigers in the loss
ATLANTA, Ga. – Memphis and Georgia State played a very tight first 60 minutes and were tied 1-1 before the Panthers pulled away for a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. Junior Chandler Klemm scored his first goal of the season for Memphis.
"Georgia State was the better team today. They deserved to win and that was true from the first minute until the final," Memphis head Richard Mulrooney said. "We were fortunate to get to halftime 0-0 and we tried to make some adjustments. This is a tough early lesson for us. If you take any games off, with our schedule the teams are good enough to expose you and we got exposed today."
The Tigers return home with a 1-1 record and will host Belmont in the home opener at Mike Rose Soccer Complex Friday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. The match will be part of a doubleheader with the Tigers' women's soccer team.
Friday night will be a special night at Mike Rose with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in attendance to recognize two cancer survivors that are special to the Memphis soccer family. Alyssa de Jong, daughter of men's goalkeeper coach Remco, and her cousin, Tyler, were both diagnosed with cancer and have since raised $200,000 to fund and raise awareness for St. Jude. As part of the evening there will be donation tables set up for the families.
After playing a scoreless first half, Georgia State opened the scoring but Klemm had a quick response and equalized just seconds later. The goal for Klemm was the third of his Memphis career and tied the match 1-1.
The teams remained tied for the next 10 minutes before the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick and converted to take a 2-1 lead. GSU added two more goals with sophomore forward Hannes Burmeister completing a hat trick.
Memphis goalkeeper Jake Leeker was massive in the first half, recording six saves to keep the match scoreless. Memphis was unable to get a shot off in the first period, while GSU ripped off 15 shots including the six on target.
The match was very physical with a combined 38 fouls called and eight yellow cards issued.
