Tigers face No. 19 Ole Miss Friday and Little Rock Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After getting off to a hot start with a pair of wins to open the season, Memphis will now hit the road for the first time to take on two regional foes.
The Tigers will first head south to play at No. 19 Ole Miss Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling west to Little Rock to take on the UALR Trojans Sunday at 7 p.m.
"Throughout the preseason and to now we are continuing to get better but we have a lot of work to do," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It's a long season and we are still hoping to get some injured players back. Ole Miss is a rival of ours and we know we have to be at our best to have a chance to win that game. These games are usually close. I love the Ole Miss game and I know our kids will be up for it. It's going to be a true challenge."
Both Memphis and Ole Miss are 2-0 going into the match and have scored a total of six goals apiece. The Rebels beat Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-0, and Northwestern State, 3-0. Ole Miss senior Addie Forbus scored four of the team's six goals in the first two matches.
The last two meetings between the Tigers and Rebels have gone to overtime, with Ole Miss narrowly winning last season. The teams finished tied in 2014 and Memphis hasn't beaten Ole Miss since 2011.
Little Rock is 0-2 to start the campaign with shutout losses to Northwestern State and Central Arkansas. The Trojans return all 11 starters from last year's team that finished 8-7-5 and was fifth in the Sun Belt.
The teams haven't played since 2011 and Memphis holds a 7-1-0 record all time against Little Rock. The Trojans only win in the series came in 1997 at home.
Valerie Sanderson started the season strong with three goals and an assist during the opening weekend for Memphis. The senior had a goal and an assist in the opener before bagging a pair of goals to beat WKU in the second match.
"Valerie was outstanding last weekend and we have really challenged her in her senior year. She has done a phenomenal job. She played close to 90 minutes in both games and was a tireless worker. Good things happen when you work hard. I thought she was big for us and hopefully she gains confidence and takes it from week to week," said Monaghan.
Memphis will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host UMKC on Friday, Sept 4 at 7:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team.
Friday night will be a special night at Mike Rose with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in attendance to recognize two cancer survivors that are special to the Memphis soccer family. Alyssa de Jong, daughter of men's goalkeeper coach Remco, and her cousin, Tyler, were both diagnosed with cancer and have since raised $200,000 to fund and raise awareness for St. Jude. As part of the evening there will be donation tables set up for the families.
Memphis won't be in action on Sunday, Sept. 4 but the Tigers will be hosting a youth clinic from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., prior to the start of the men's match against Missouri State at 2 p.m.
