Opening Spring in Chicago in 2017
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team capped its 2016 season as the number three ranked team in the Ohio Valley Region and had three returning singles players returning among the top 15 in the region.
As a team, Memphis ranked third behind Kentucky and Vanderbilt and ahead of Purdue, Indiana, East Tennessee State, Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State, Louisville and Tennessee Tech. The Tigers actually played three of those opponents last year, winning all three, winning at Vanderbilt and defeating Louisville at a neutral site. Memphis also downed Tennessee Tech in a home match last season.
Rising juniors Andrew Watson, Ryan Peniston and Kai Lemke all capped the year in the top 15 rankings in the Ohio Valley. Watson finished eighth, with Peniston right behind him at nine, while Lemke finished ranked 13th in the region. Kentucky's William Bushamuka led the year-end region rankings.
In doubles, the Tigers team of Louis Asser and Lemke capped the year ranked number seven out of 10 ranked teams. Asser completed his Tiger career and will not be back next year, which means Lemke will be working with a new partner.
The Tigers also announced Thursday that they will open the 2017 spring dual season in Chicago in the ITA Kick-Off Classic Weekend. Memphis will be the four seeds in the pod, facing host Northwestern in the opening round. The other two teams in that regional are Stanford and Georgia Tech, who will face on another in the other match at the site. That opening weekend will be Feb. 17-20th. The winning team in each pod will advance to the National Team Indoor Championships, hosted next season by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
