ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Memphis senior Luis Hanssler grabbed the day-one lead in the men's decathlon at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday. Tigers sophomore Martine Bye is in third place in the women's heptathlon.
The decathlon and heptathlon continue Friday at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex on the UCF campus.
Hanssler, the two-time American Athletic Conference decathlon champion, leads the field with 3879 points after five events. Hanssler's closest competitor is over 200 points behind him.
Hanssler placed first in four of Friday's five events, including the 100-meter dash (11.15), long jump (23-6; 7.16m), shot put (40-4.25; 12.30m) and 400-meter dash (49.55). He placed third in the high jump (6-4; 1.93m).
The decathlon's five remaining events on Friday are the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meter run.
In the women's heptathlon, Bye is third with 3077 points and is only seven points out of second place. Bye placed first in both the high jump (5-8.75; 1.75m) and shot put (42-9.5; 13.04m). Both marks set American Athletic Conference meet records in the events within the heptathlon competition.
Bye also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.23) and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (15.81). Her 200-meter dash time and high jump and shot put marks all were personal-bests.
The heptathlon concludes Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
Scoring the team's only points – men and women – Thursday was Luke Vaughn, who placed sixth in the men's hammer throw. Vaughn's sixth-place performance scored three points for the Tigers men's squad. His 176-6 (53.81m) throw was a personal-best.
In the only running events on day one, James Durkin placed 11th in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 33:04.67, and Bailey Kennemer was 15th in the women's 10,000 meters (38:05.47).
In addition to Hanssler and Bye, Vaughn and Carolina Carmichael are vying for titles Friday. Vaughn looks to defend his men's discus championship from a year ago, and Carmichael is trying for a three-peat in the women's pole vault. Carmichael won the outdoor women's pole vault crown in 2014 and 2015.
