Women's Golf in San Diego for Match Play Event
Mar 20, 2016 | Women's Golf
First match play for the Tigers under Coach Harrelson.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's golf team is heading to California for another tournament, but this one will have a new wrinkle – match play. Memphis will be one of 16 teams competing in the San Diego State March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Club of Rancho Sante Fe, beginning on Monday, Mar. 21st.
Match play will be new to the Lady Tigers under coach Beth Harrelson. NCAA golf added match play to the NCAA Championships last year for the first time, as the top eight teams after the first three rounds of stroke play then participated in three rounds of match play for the team championship.
In the San Diego event, Memphis will be seeded 14th as the Tigers' current Golfstat ranking is 93 in the country. They will face the third seed in the first round, taking on number nine ranked Arizona in the first round. The winner of the Memphis vs. Arizona match up will face the winners of the California versus Kansas match in the quarterfinals.
The remainder of the field includes eight teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the Golfstat rankings, led by number two ranked USC and number six UCLA. Arizona, the Tigers' first round opponents, Stanford (11), Cal (15), Arizona State (13), San Diego State (17) and Oregon (24) round out the top 25 in the field. Stanford won the NCAA championship in match play last season.
Memphis will be represented by the team of Leighann Cabush, Sydney Colwill, Madison Thomas, Emily Goldenstein and Ashleigh Whisenant.
"We've been playing match play in practice the last couple of days," Harrelson said. "I think a tournament like this has the opportunity really help our confidence as we head in to the last events before the conference tournament."
First round tee times will go off Monday at 7:30 a.m. (PT). The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and will start tee times off one and 10. A complete tournament bracket and updated scoring is posted on www.BirdieFire.com under the San Diego State March Mayhem at The Farms.
