Men’s Tennis in California For Four Matches
Mar 14, 2016 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team (7-5), ranked number 28 in the country in the latest ITA poll, is in California and prepping for four non-conference matches, including a Tuesday match at Pepperdine.
The last time the two teams met was in 2013 in the NCAA Round of 16. Memphis won the doubles point in that match-up, but fell 4-2 in the NCAA tournament. This is just the second meeting between the two programs and is Memphis' first-ever appearance in Malibu, where Pepperdine is located.
The Tigers are looking to retire a three-match losing streak. Memphis went on the road and lost three straight to ranked opponents, including losses at No. 34 Baylor, No. 10 Oklahoma and No. 35 Tulane. The doubles team of Ryan Peniston and Felix Rauch picked up Memphis' only win on the road at Tulane and the Green Wave won all six singles matches, so each Tiger is looking to restart a singles winning streak in California this week.
Pepperdine is 4-5 on the season and in their last dual match, lost to American Conference foe Tulane, 4-0.
Lautaro Pane leads the Waves with a 7-0 mark in dual season play, including a 4-0 mark at number three and a 2-0 mark at number four singles. He is also teaming with Pedro Iamachkine for a 4-0 mark at two doubles and a 1-3 mark at one dubs.
After the match at Pepperdine, the Tigers will head south to San Diego, where they will participate in the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic. Memphis will open their tournament schedule against No. 30 ranked Princeton, Thursday, at 10 a.m. (PT)/12 p.m. (CT). The winner of that match will face the winner of the San Diego State vs. #10 Texas Tech match on Friday. Whoever faces Texas Tech will play at 10 a.m. (PT) and whoever faces San Diego State will play at 2 p.m. (PT).
Princeton comes to the tournament off a pair of 6-1 wins over No. 58 Indiana and No. 24 Penn State. The neutral site match against Princeton will mark Memphis' first-ever match against the Tigers from Princeton.
