MEMPHIS – A pair of Memphis sophomore men's tennis players is ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released Tuesday afternoon. Ryan Peniston moves in to the rankings for the first time this season at number 46, while Andrew Watson remains at number 87, where he was ranked during the last individual rankings back in January.
Peniston is unbeaten in dual match singles so far this season, with a 3-0 mark at number one and a 3-0 mark at number two as Memphis is off to a 5-2 start through the first seven matches of the dual season. He is 19-4 on the year, including a 13-4 mark in fall tournament play, and is also 15-5 in doubles play, including a 5-2 mark at number two with freshman teammate Felix Rauch.
Watson is currently third on the Tigers' roster with 14 singles wins, sporting a 14-6 overall singles mark, including a 3-1 mark at number two singles. Watson has teamed with fellow sophomore Shakeel Manji for a 3-1 mark at number three doubles and the duo is 8-3 on the year in doubles play.
Memphis is currently on a break from match play as the Tigers' home facility, The Racquet Club of Memphis is hosting the ATP 250 Memphis Open this week. Memphis returns to action on Feb. 21st at No. 20 Ole Miss.
Memphis follows that match-up with a top 20 program with a Texas road swing that includes an American Athletic Conference opener at No. 51 SMU (Feb. 25). Following the conference match at SMU, the Tigers play back-to-back matches at top five ranked opponents, playing at No. 4 Baylor (Feb. 27) and No. 5 Oklahoma (Feb. 29).
The tough road test will help prep Memphis for what is shaping up to be a challenging American Athletic Conference tournament, hosted this year by Memphis at MUS, Apr. 21-24th. The American currently has five players ranked in the top 50 in the latest ITA rankings: No. 1 ranked Dominik Koepfer (Tulane), No. 7 ranked Roberto Cid (USF), No. 26 ranked Dominic Cotrone (USF), No. 31 ranked Hunter Johnson (SMU) and the Tigers' Peniston (No. 46).
