Myers records eighth double-double of the season.
DALLAS, Texas – University of Memphis senior Michaella Moss had a team-high 10 kills and junior Faith Myers posted her third-straight double-double, but it wasn't enough as SMU posted a 3-0 American Athletic Conference volleyball win over the Tigers Sunday. The Mustangs won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-16.
The setback dropped Memphis to 14-16 overall and 6-12 in The American. SMU improved to 23-7 overall and 16-2 in the conference. The Mustangs hold a one-match advantage over second-place Cincinnati (15-3 record) heading into the final week of regular-season play.
Moss' 10 kills Sunday was her second-straight, double-digit kills performance and her third of the season. She had 11 kills in the Tigers' Nov. 18 win at Tulsa. Fellow seniors McKenzie Hayes and Catlin Lilly recorded eight and seven kills, respectively.
Myers had a team-best 19 assists to go with 11 digs. The double-double was her third straight and eighth of the season. Mady Ruhlman led Memphis with 14 digs.
After dropping the first set, Memphis attempted to bounce back and tie the match with a victory in set No. 2. The Tigers were either tied or held the lead much of the first half of the second set and led 12-11 midway through the game. Two Moss kills and three service aces helped Memphis stay with SMU.
The Mustangs, however, went on an 8-3 run to gain a 19-15 advantage they did not lose the remainder of the set. Memphis closed to within three on two occasions (23-20, 24-21) late, but SMU took the 25-21 win.
SMU closed the match with a 25-16 win in the third set. The Mustangs held an 11-7 advantage only to see Memphis put together a 6-1 run to gain a 13-12 lead. Two Hayes kills ignited the run. SMU regrouped and went on a 9-1 run to take a 21-14 advantage and put the game out of reach.
The opening set had eight ties and one lead change. All eight ties came in the game's first 20 points, with the last knotted score at 10-all. SMU took the lead at 11-10 and steadily built on its advantage the rest of the way.
The Tigers return home for the final weekend of the 2016 season Nov. 25-26. Memphis hosts Cincinnati Friday, Nov. 25 and East Carolina Saturday, Nov. 26. Both matches start at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
