Women’s Soccer Wraps Up Weekend With 5-1 Win Over Cincinnati

Tigers remain unbeaten at home with commanding victory
Senior Forward Valerie Sanderson scored twice in the match, giving her 47 career goals. She is now tied for the most career goals scored in program history with Christabel Oduro (2010-13).
"First of all, ecstatic to get the win," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "They are a quality team that we played against. They are extremely difficult to play against. They play with their heart on their sleeve."
Cincinnati took a quick 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of the contest. Jaycie Brown scored her first goal of the season to put the Bearcats on top.
Memphis had the opportunity to equalize the match just less than two minutes later. A foul committed in the box by Cincinnati led to a penalty kick that Jessica Lisi converted on. She now has four goals this season.
The Tigers scored the go-ahead goal in the 23rd minute. Sanderson scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year on a cross by Marie Levasseur. Sanderson flicked her shot into the bottom corner of the goal.
In the final moments of the first half, the Tigers added one more to their lead. Memphis was granted a corner kick that sailed into congestion in the box. After the ball was initially cleared, Serena Dolan tapped it back in the box for Chanel Hudson-Marks to finish.
Memphis continued to add onto its lead with another goal by Sanderson in the 56th minute. Sanderson headed the ball into the right corner after a cross by Lizzie Woerner.
Sessen Stevens put the match away for good with her first goal of the season in the 86th minute. The Cincinnati goalkeeper saved a header by Sanderson and Stevens was in position to put the ball in the net.
Cincinnati continued to try and pressure the Memphis defense, but the Tigers held strong to keep the Bearcats scoreless for the remainder of the contest.The Bearcats ultimately outshot the Tigers, 17-12. Maryse Bard-Martel registered five saves with 90 minutes in goal. She also improves to 9-3-1 on the year.
Memphis remains at home next weekend with a Friday night contest against Tulsa. Kick-off against the Golden Hurricane is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex where admission is always free. First 100 fans into the complex will receive a free custom Memphis soccer scarf.
