Tiger offense dominates en route to fourth conference win of the year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior forward Valerie Sanderson became the all-time leading goal scorer in Memphis women's soccer history Friday evening as she led the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over Tulsa. Sanderson scored the first Tiger goal early in the first half to push the Tigers to 10-3-1 overall record and 4-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
"I thought we played really well, Tulsa's a good team," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We did some good things today. I thought we created some chances to score even more goals and I am proud of these girls. What they did tonight against a quality opponent is massive."
Sanderson surpassed Christabel Oduro's 47 all-time goals to sit at the top of the goal-scoring list. She ranks in several other categories including first in game-winning goals by a senior (5), second in single-season goals by a senior (13), third in single-season points by a senior (31) and second all-time in career points (114). She is just seven points shy of tying the all-time points record.
"Val's been great. She's been amazing overall, but this season she's really been a leader, a tireless worker and I couldn't tell you enough great things about her," added Monaghan.
Sanderson scored her record-setting goal in the 16th minute of the match with the help of Marie Levasseur and Serena Dolan. Dolan's one-touch to Levasseur on the left side opened up a cross right to Sanderson.
Mikayla Morton added to the Tiger lead in the 35th minute. Her second goal of the season was headed in after a corner kick by Jessica Lisi.
Memphis maintained dominance throughout the entirety of the first half, let alone the whole match. At the half, the Tigers held a 19-2 shot advantage over the Golden Hurricane. Memphis finished with a 31-7 shot advantage and 11-0 corner kick edge over Tulsa.
Lisi joined the scoring group in the 53rd minute with her fifth goal of the season. The freshman midfielder took the ball up the middle and dribbled to the corner of the box for her shot for an unassisted goal.
Sanderson scored her second goal of the match just over a minute later with an assist credited to Levasseur. She now sits at 49 career goals that happens to match the all-time leader on the men's side (Morton Akerfors, 1987-90).
Tiger goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel registered three saves in her seventh shutout of the season.
This was the first time since 2013 that the Tigers have won double-digit matches in a season.
Tonight's match ended a three-match home streak. The Tigers will hit the road for the next two matches, starting at SMU on Oct. 20. Live stats for the match can be found on www.gotigersgo.com.
