Early goal by USF proves to be too much to overcome for the Tigers
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback Saturday at USF in Tampa, Fla. The Tigers conceded an early goal as they fall to 7-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
"It wasn't for a lack of effect tonight, USF is a good team," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "We stood toe-for-toe with them. I told the guys after the game with that type of performance, we can get results in the next two games."
USF took an early lead over the Tigers with a goal in the sixth minute of the contest. Nazeem Bartman beat out a pair of Memphis defenders and fired his shot from the right side.
Late in the match, the Tiger offense provided multiple opportunities to equalize the score. Diving saves, however, by USF goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic kept the Memphis scoreless.
The Tigers finished the match tied in shots with the Bulls with 14. Hector Cantele led the team with five saves. Jake Leeker recorded a season-high eight saves against the Bulls.
Memphis will return home next weekend to celebrate Senior Day against UConn. Kick-off against the Huskies is scheduled for 7 p.m. and Senior Day recognition will happen prior to kick-off. The game will be streamed on the Memphis Tiger Network.
