Jan 05, 2016 | Baseball
Coach from Oscar-Winning Documentary ‘Undefeated’ will headline the event
Famed Memphis businessman, author and football coach Bill Courtney will be the featured guest at the 2016 Meet the Tigers Banquet to be held at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. The event will take place January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the arena's convention hall.
Â
"We are thrilled with the opportunity for Bill Courtney to come and share his message with our team, with the Tiger faithful and the surrounding community," Memphis baseball head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "This event is geared towards several groups; the college athlete, the business man and people in general to hear about what servant leadership is and what it means to get out of your comfort zone. I'm selfishly excited that our team has the opportunity to hear Bill speak but also wanted to invite the entire Tiger community."
Â
Courtney founded Classic American Hardwoods, Inc. in 2001 and today still operates as the President and CEO of the business, which also has sales offices in China and Vietnam and boasts sales in excess of $40 million annually.
Â
The Memphis native became the volunteer football coach of Manassas High School in 2003 and brought a dramatic turnaround to the program. The success garnered national attention and became the subject of an Academy Award winning Documentary in 2012.
Â
He released his first book in 2014, Against the Grain, which has received national recognition as a best-selling manifesto covering leadership, service, character and other tenets that build the foundation for a meaningful life.
Â
This year's event follows in the same tradition of recent great Memphis baseball banquets that featured guests such as MLB Hall of Famer George Brett, best-selling novelist John Grisham and Jim "The Rookie" Morris.
