Memphis and Dartmouth Play to 1-1 Draw
Sep 06, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Elizabeth Woerner scores second career goal in tie
Memphis was able to put a poor first half behind them to earn a 1-1 draw against Dartmouth Sunday at Vanderbilt's Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Nashville. The Tigers (2-1-1) played a strong second half and two overtime periods with far more chances than the Big Green but were unable to score a game-winner.
Â
"The first half was the worst soccer we've played since I've been the coach here. We were extremely lethargic and it was disappointing. When the whistle blew we weren't ready to play and it showed," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "At halftime, tactics were not talked about. It was all about effort and playing with your heart on your sleeve. In the second half it was like two completely different teams."
Â
Neither team played particularly well in the first half but Dartmouth outshot Memphis 9-5 and both goalkeepers were called on to make two saves each.
Â
In the second half, the Tigers completely dominated and had 13 total shots and held the Green to just two shots, none of which were on target. Despite controlling the match after halftime, Memphis couldn't get a winner.
Â
"I told the kids if you don't come to play for 90 minutes, you don't deserve to win. Today that's what happened to us. It's frustrating but the kids set a standard in the second half with their effort. We as coaches now have to hold them to that standard," Monaghan said.
Â
The Tigers trailed 1-0 approaching the final 10 minutes before freshman Elizabeth Woerner scored a great goal from the top of the box that flew into the top corner. The goal was the second of her career after she notched the game-winner against Alabama to open the season.
Â
"It was a great goal. We've switched Lizzie into an attacking midfield role and she gives us another scoring threat in the midfield. It was obviously a very important goal," said Monaghan.
Â
The Tigers return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex after two weeks on the road. Memphis will host UT Martin, Friday at 7:30 p.m., before welcoming Idaho to MRSC, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Â
"We need to learn from this evening. We can learn a lot from the way that we started and we need to show that with a very focused and hard week of work. We need to start next Friday night like we started the second half tonight. If we do that we give ourselves a good chance to win," Monaghan said.
