Sydney Kingston’s first career goal not enough to beat the Hilltoppers
Sydney Kingston scored her first career goal but the Tigers couldn't manage anything else as Memphis lost 2-1 to Western Kentucky Friday night at WKU Soccer Complex. Memphis returns to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host Ole Miss Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Â
"We never seemed to be on the same page tonight. I didn't feel like we played as a team," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Today we came up against a team that wanted it a little more than we did. We were just very disconnected tonight."
Kingston finished off a corner kick taken by Elysia Masters that tied the game 1-1 in the 73rd minute but 10 minutes later WKU retook the lead. The game-winning goal, which came in the 83rd minute, didn't leave much time left for Memphis to answer.
Â
Western Kentucky grabbed the lead in the 34th minute on a goal from junior forward Iris Dunn, who was able to put it in after Memphis goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel had tried to punch the ball away.
Â
The winning goal came after a breakdown defensively in the midfield. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Chua made a long run and fired a long-range shot for the goal.
Â
"We worked on being a little patient in the back and I think that may have hampered us in the attack. We played a little more direct in the second half and that's not how we want to play. We didn't play our style of soccer very well," Monaghan said.
Â
It was a fairly even match statistically, with the Tigers and Hilltoppers each finishing with 10 shots. Western Kentucky held a slight 7-6 advantage on corner kicks.
Â
"I'm not so sure we didn't take this game a little lightly. We obviously have to regroup before a very big match Sunday night against a very good team. We are too inconsistent up to this point," said Monaghan.
Â
The Tigers will have a big opportunity to rebound when hosting their second SEC opponent of the season, Ole Miss, Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
