Memphis Outlasts Idaho 4-3 in Overtime
Sep 13, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Freshman Lizzie Woerner scored the game-winner in the second overtime period
Â
"It was a crazy game," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We threw a new system at our team and I thought I was the most brilliant coach in the world because we started so well. Then we let in two goals that normally we wouldn't give up. It was just a game of highs and lows."
Â
Forward Marie Levasseur started the game in outstanding fashion. The freshman scored the opening goal in just the second minute of the match after some great passing by her teammates Sydney Kingston and Valerie Sanderson.
Â
Just a few minutes later Levasseur stormed back into the box and squared a ball for Sanderson who smashed it into the net to make the score 2-0 after just seven minutes played.
Â
The lead wasn't safe though, as 10 minutes later Idaho got a goal back. In the 17th minute, forward Kayla Watanabe was played clean through with a ball over the top. Watanabe caught Memphis goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel off her line and lobbed just out of her reach.
Â
Idaho got an equalizer five minutes later when Kavita Battan took a pass from Elexis Schlossarek and smashed it across the goal and into the net.
Â
The wild first half wasn't finished yet though as moments later Memphis retook the lead. Sanderson bagged her second goal of the match in the 26th minute after a cross from Levasseur hit off the post and fell to Sanderson's feet.
Â
Memphis had a 3-2 lead at halftime but held a much larger advantage in possession and outshot the Vandals 13-3.
Â
Shortly after the start of the second half Idaho equalized again as Watanabe scored her second goal of the match on a blasted shot that beat Bard-Martel at the near post.
Â
Neither team had many more chances as the second half wore on.
Â
"When they tied the game, 3-3, I thought we played not to make a mistake. I told them before overtime not to be scared to make mistakes. I told them to go for it. They brought that mentality and we're happy to get the win," Monaghan said.
Â
Freshmen Olivia Guathier and Elizabeth Woerner combined for the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute. Gauthier smashed a direct free kick off of the post but Woerner was quick to react and followed up with a shot that was deflected into the goal to end the match.
Â
Memphis will play two more games next weekend, starting with a match at Western Kentucky Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers will then return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host its second SEC opponent of the season, Ole Miss, Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
