Three-time all-conference performer to serve as program's graduate assistant.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Brittany Carter-Carswell, one of Tigers women's basketball all-time greats, makes her return to the program as a graduate assistant, head coach Melissa McFerrin announced Monday.
Carter-Carswell, who graduated in December of 2010 with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with a criminal justice emphasis, is pursuing a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies. In her graduate assistant role, Carter-Carswell's primary responsibilities are to assist with team travel and training table, equipment inventory and community service projects.
"Brittany is the type of individual you want around the program, a high quality and high character person," said McFerrin, who is in her eighth season at Memphis in 2015-16. "Brittany chose to attend Memphis my first month on the job and bought into our program here when we didn't have a lot to sell. I've told her that I will forever be thankful to that group of young ladies for coming to Memphis.
"She is one of the greatest players to wear a Memphis uniform, and in her role, Brittany will bring a lot of experience and wisdom that she can pass on to our current players."
A three-year letterwinner from 2009-12, Carter-Carswell finished her playing career as the program's 14th all-time leading scorer with 1,437 points. She also grabbed 422 boards in her 93-game career.
As a sophomore in 2009-10, Carter-Carswell set the school's sophomore scoring mark with 654 points (19.2 ppg). In that season, she netted a career-high 49 points against in a 98-83 victory over Sacramento State Nov. 27, 2009. The 49-point performance set the program's single-game scoring record. Carter-Carswell's 49 points also are the most in a game by any Memphis basketball player, male or female.
Carter-Carswell was a three-time All-Conference USA performer, earning first team honors in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and a second team accolade in 2011-12. She is one of four Tigers in program history to receive all-conference distinction three times, joining LaTonya Johnson, Keeta Matthews and Tamika Whitmore in that elite group. Carter-Carswell also was named the 2009-10 Conference USA Newcomer of the Year.
Carter-Carswell, a Covington, Ga., native, transferred to Memphis from the University of Georgia after the 2007-08 season.
Following her collegiate career, Carter-Carswell played professional basketball in Israel.
