Pujats Claims National Runner-Up in Pole Vault at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Oregon – Senior men's track and field athlete Pauls Pujats claimed national runner-up honors with a second-place finish in the pole vault and a pair of Tigers added All-American honors on the first day of NCAA Championship action, Wednesday.

Pujats opened his competition clearing both 5.15 and 5.20 meters before recording his first miss at 5.40 meters (17-8 ½). He cleared that barrier on his next attempts and blew past 5.50 meters before suffering a miss on his first try at 5.55 meters (18-4 ½). He again cleared the pressure and the height on his second attempt and was one of just four remaining athletes out of the field of 24 to attempt 5.60 meters (18-4 ½). He missed on all three attempts while Akron's Shawn Barber cleared the height on his second try to claim the national championship in the pole vault.

In his first trip to the NCAA finals, senior Kyle Bynum grabbed All-American honors with an eighth place finish in the javelin. After advancing to the finals, Bynum finished eighth with a best throw of 229-11.

Freshman Michael Criticos also made his inaugural appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He finished 13th in the javelin, earning second team All-American honors, with a best mark of 68.09 meters (223-4).Â

Memphis will have three female student-athletes in competition on Thursday. Carolina Carmichael and Sabrina Hochreuther will compete in the pole vault, beginning at 6:45 p.m. (CT). Senior Maya Williamson will compete in the 800-meter run semifinals at 7:44 p.m. (CT).
