Perrot, van Meijel tie for 10th individually for Memphis
Thomas Perrot was one-under for the day while Lars Van Meijel shot even par as the Memphis tandem tied for 10th individually and helped the Tigers to a fifth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship Monday.
The tournament played at the Black Diamond golf community in Lecanto, Fla., was adjusted over the weekend to a two-day event due to the threat of inclement weather this week.
Memphis came back from an opening round 296 to climb to fifth during the second of two rounds Sunday. The Tigers, who entered Monday's play two strokes ahead of sixth-place Cincinnati and four strokes in front of seventh-place Tulsa, entrenched themselves in fifth with a 284 (-4) team score for the final round.
Memphis' 284 on Monday marked the team's low round for the spring season while the three-round 869 (+5) was the Tigers' second-best score of the 2014-15 season. Memphis carded an 867 last month to place second at the UALR First Tee Classic.
No. 18 South Florida had a comfortable, 16-stroke lead in the team standings following Sunday's play and despite a 273 team score (-15) by No. 29 SMU during Monday's final round, won the team title by 13 strokes with an 837 score (-27). SMU was second with an 850 while UCF was third with an 856. No. 36 Houston shot a three-round score 866 and held off Memphis for fourth despite a final round 291.
Perrot was two-under par for the final round of the tournament after a birdie on No. 14. Back-to-back bogeys left him at even before a birdie on the par 5, 509-yard finishing hole. Perrot's birdie was one of four by the Tigers on No. 18 Monday.
An eagle on No. 14 (par 5, 505 yards) highlighted van Meijel's final round as he finished with a 72 for the day and was two-under for the tournament. Both Perrot and van Meijel finished with three-round 214 scores and were part of a four-way tie for 10th.
Eithel McGowen birdied four of his final eight holes to come back from being two-over on the front nine and finished with a 70 for a three-round score of 218 (+2) to move up five spots from Sunday and tie for 18th.
South Florida's Ryan Fricker shot a 205 (-11) to win the individual title by two strokes. SMU's Bryson Dechambeau, the highest ranked individual in the field at No. 32, shot a final round 64 to finish as the runner up.
