After first-round struggles Memphis' top golfers shot subpar rounds on Monday to help Memphis climb to 11th with one round to play at Auburn's Tiger Invitational.
Cory Gaylord fired a three-under par 69 while Thomas Perrot shot a 70 during Monday's play on the Grand National Lake Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Opelika, Ala.
With the tandem's play, Memphis emerged from a first-round tie with Mississippi State for 12th. Memphis will begin Tuesday's play five strokes outside the tournament's top-10. The Tigers will be grouped with regional rivals Ole Miss and State's Bulldogs. The three teams will be the first off the No. 10 tee early Tuesday morning.
Ole Miss has a two-round score of 596 (+20) followed by the Tigers' 601 (+25). Mississippi State is in 12th place with a two-round 602 (+26).
Gaylord had shot a first round 80 while Perrot began the tournament with a 77.
On Monday, Gaylord's second round was highlighted by an Eagle 2 on No. 16. The senior had a bogey on the same hole during Sunday's play. He followed up No. 16 with a birdie on No. 17. With Memphis beginning its round at No. 10, Gaylord also had birdies at Nos. 2 & 4 after the turn. With a two-round 149 (+5), Gaylord is tied for 36th.
Perrot's second round included four birdies but two also two bogies on the back nine. He would also birdie Nos. 4 & 5 but a double bogey on No. 7 left him two-under par for the round. With a two-round 147 (+3), Perrot is tied for 25th heading into Tuesday's play.
As a team, Auburn was -15 on Monday and stretched out a 10-stroke lead over second-place Troy. Auburn has a two-round score of 563 (-13). Troy has an 11-stroke lead on South Alabama, which is third.
Auburn's Michael Johnson shot a 66 on Monday and moved into a three-way tie for the individual lead with UNCG's Taylor Coalson and Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh. Fans can continue to follow play through Golfstat.com's live scoring link.
