Tigers final-round 286 leads tournament field
Lars Van Meijel fired a 68 Tuesday to help Memphis climb to second place in the final standings at the UALR/First Tee Classic. Memphis' final-round 286 team score allowed the Tigers to finish just one stroke back of team champion Tulsa and equal the best finish of the season.
With Tuesday's 68 on Chenal Country Club's Bear Den Course, van Meijel finished with a three-round 214 (74-72-68) and tied for fifth in the individual standings.
Thomas Perrot tied for 10th after carding a final round 71 to finish with a 217 (73-73-71). Ben Pearson, who was playing as an individual at this week's tournament, also finished in the tie for 10th with a 217 (73-71-73).
Eithel McGowen began the day in third place but a final-round 75 moved him into a tie for 17th in the final standings with a 218 (71-72-75).
The Tigers began the day six strokes back of Tulsa who did not surrender a second-round lead but shot a 291 for the final round. A final-round 68 gave the Golden Hurricane's Matt Mabrey the individual title by one stroke. The Hurricane's opening-round 285 proved to be the difference in the final standings.
Memphis concludes a stretch in which it competes in three tournaments in as many weeks next Monday and Tuesday at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate in West Point, Miss. Following the Old Waverly Intercollegiate, the Tigers will compete at the American Athletic Conference Championship April 26-28.
