Goodwin Receives League's Sportsmanship Award
Mar 11, 2015 | Men's Basketball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Memphis' Shaq Goodwin has been named the 2015 American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award recipient, the league office announced Wednesday.
Last season, Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick earned the conference's Sportsmanship Award honor.
This is the third-consecutive season that Goodwin received postseason conference recognition. As a freshman in 2012-13, the Atlanta, Ga., native was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Last season, Goodwin was named to the 2013-14 All-American Athletic Conference second team.
The American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award is reserved for the student-athlete that best reflects the ideals of sportsmanship - ethical behavior, fair play and integrity - in collegiate basketball.
A three-year starter, Goodwin was one of only three returnees that played substantial minutes in 2013-14, so the 6-foot-9 forward was counted on to provide leadership for this season's young Tigers squad.
On the court, Goodwin leads the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and field goal percentage (55.0) and is second in scoring (9.5 ppg) and blocks (34). During the final month of the regular season, the junior picked up his play, nearly averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 54.9 percent from the floor in the last 10 games.
Goodwin ranks among the American Athletic Conference statistical leaders in scoring (27th), rebounding (4th), field goal percentage (5th) and blocked shots (12th).
Away from the hardwood, Goodwin has taken part and continues to be involved in many community service projects, including reading to elementary schoolchildren and assisting with a basketball day camp for Special Olympics participants.
In his career, Goodwin also has earned Tiger Academic 30 and Tiger 3.0 Club distinction.
