Volleyball Sweeps Tulane, 3-0

Three outsides with double digit kills in the win.
MEMPHIS – Led by a balanced outside attack, the Memphis volleyball team (18-14, 9-10 American) swept Tulane (10-21, 4-15 American), 3-0, Wednesday night on Thanksgiving Eve.
It was the outside hitters that feasted for the Tigers, as Oluchi Agomuo, McKenzie Hayes and Catlin Lilly all tallied double digit kills in the three-setter, led by Agomuo's 13 kills and .429 attack percentage.
"Our outsides did a great job of just attacking the pin," Head Coach April Jauregui said. "They really stayed with Torika (Baleilekutu) in the middle and that opened some stuff up for us on the outside and as Faith (Myers) has played a few matches, she's getting really comfortable running this offense."
Memphis hit .225 for the night and used its offense to offset the Tulane blocking effort. Tulane out-blocked Memphis 7-3, but seven Tiger service aces also kept the Green Wave serve-receive game out of sync.
"We did a good job of getting our serves in and kept them out of their offense," Jauregui said. "Then we just told our team to stay on them and not give up on our energy level."
Agomuo led all players with 13 kills, tallying a double-double with 12 digs, which also led the Tigers. Hays and Lilly each added 11 kills, while Myers set up 31 assists and grabbed her own double-double with 11 digs behind her Tiger blockers. Lindsey Purvis added 10 digs and led all players with three service aces.
Memphis will close its 2015 season at home, Friday, with a noon match against Houston. The Cougars come in with a 19-12 overall mark and a 9-10 conference mark.
"We have a lot of the line still Friday, even without a conference tourney spot on the line," Jauregui said. "Pride, for one thing; it'll be our senior night for another. And we can still move up to a tie for fourth in the league standings with just one more win"
Houston comes in off a 3-1 loss at Cincinnati on Wednesday night. In the first meeting with the Cougars in Houston, Memphis came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
"Houston is a really good young team," Jauregui said. "They've changed their lineup since we played down there too. I already saw that they lost tonight, but it looks like it was a good match. They'll definitely want to come in and get us on our home floor."
Senior day festivities for the three-member Tiger class of Baleilekutu, Purvis and Veronica Zimmerman, will begin at 11:55 a.m. Post-match, the senior video will wrap up the season for the Tigers.
Admission for the Friday noon match is free.
