Memphis Rebounds with 2-0 Win at Cincinnati
Oct 23, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Marie Levasseur and Chanel Hudson-Marks scored the goals
The Memphis Tigers knew exactly what they needed to do as they hit the road for the final two matches of the regular season and they've accomplished a portion of that, as they beat Cincinnati, 2-0, Friday at Gettler Stadium. Memphis, who clinched a spot in the American Athletic Conference tournament with the win, will close out the regular season at East Carolina Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Â
"I'm proud of the girls. Cincinnati is an extremely tough place to play. Nobody in our conference had beaten them at their place this season so I think that says a lot about our team," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "They are a good team and the style which they play is difficult to play against and our kids did well."
Â
Freshman forward Marie Levasseur scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Tigers the lead in the 31st minute. She volleyed in a cross from Valerie Sanderson, who she is now tied for in goals for the season.
Â
The Tigers were able to give themselves some breathing room with a second goal in the 73rd minute. Freshman Chanel Hudson-Marks scored her second goal of the season.
Â
Goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel was outstanding and notched a season-high eight saves to keep the Bearcats off the board. The junior made six of those saves in the second half.
Â
"I think we've been playing some very good soccer and coming up short. Today was different. At times tonight we played some good soccer but other times we had to grit our teeth and really make sure we were focused defensively," said Monaghan.
Â
The Tigers' next opponent, the ECU Pirates, lost 2-1 in overtime to Tulsa Friday night.
