Volleyball Comes Back From 2-0 Down to Win in Five
Oct 16, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Second time this year Memphis comes from 2-0 down to win in five.
HOUSTON – There's something about this Memphis volleyball team and the road. After winning six American Athletic Conference road games last season en route a 23-11 season, the Tigers are now 3-1 on the road in league play after coming back from a 2-0 deficit at Houston (14-5, 4-3 American), Friday night.
"I am happy we fought back," Head Coach April Jauregui said. "I am proud of how we made adjustments as a team. The #1 thing in a team sport is chemistry and energy. If we fight for each other and bring our best every day, whatever the best may be, we can walk off the court proud. I am proud of the last three sets, I am proud of the fight they showed."
Houston took a quick lead in the match, with a 25-21 first set win in which the Cougars hit .333. Memphis bounced back and led 19-17 in the second set when two Tiger attack errors and a Houston ace started an 8-0 run that gave the Cougars the second set, 25-19.
In the thir set, Memphis got its offense back on track, hitting .269, and behind four kills from Michaella Moss, cut the deficit in half with a 25-14 third set victory.
Neither offense was stellar in the fourth set. Memphis hit .053 while Houston hit .118, but two Tiger service aces made all the difference in a 25-23 fourth set win that knotted the match at 2-all.
The final set tied up early, but Memphis strung together points, using a 9-4 run to build a 10-6 lead. The two teams sided one another out for points after that, and with Memphis up 12-8, Houston would win three straight points to cut the Tiger lead to one at 12-11. But Memphis blocked a pair of Cougar attacks and Moss downed her ninth kill of the day to close out the win, 15-11.
"We will continue to work on the skills and get better," Jauregui said. "But it feels good to get a win together. I thought Mickey (Michaella Moss) did a great job coming in and executing the game pla. We really needed that lift from her tonight."
Catlin Lilly led Memphis with 12 kills, the lone Tiger to down double-digit kills on the night. She added 16 digs for the double-double and a career-best two solo blocks in the win. Veronica Zimmerman added eight kills with 13 digs and 30 assists in the win, while Summer Morgan led Memphis with six total blocks. Moss finished with nine kills and eight digs in the win. Mady Ruhlman led the Memphis defense with 24 digs.
Houston's Brookah Palmer led all players with 18 kills on 53 attacks, while Olivia O'Dell added 24 digs. Chenelle Walker led all players with nine blocks in the loss for the Cougars.
Memphis remains on the four-match road swing with a Sunday contest at Tulane. That match will be played at Devlin Fieldhouse and begins at 1 p.m.
