Memphis Loses Late to No. 15 UConn
Oct 15, 2015 | Women's Soccer
The Tigers allowed the game’s lone goal in the 79th minute
For the second straight match, Memphis tussled with a nationally-ranked opponent and fell narrowly short of a win. The Tigers were arguably the better team Thursday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex, despite allowing a late goal and losing 1-0 to No. 15 UConn.
"We did a very good job of possessing and keeping the ball but at the end of the day I'm disappointed with the number of opportunities they had, even though we did outshoot them," Memphis assistant coach Johnny Walker said. "They are a very dangerous team and for us to allow them to have the chances is disappointing."
Memphis fired off 16 shots and had numerous chances to grab a lead over the Huskies but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. The Tigers also produced seven corner kicks in the match.
Valerie Sanderson, who had four shots in the match, hit the post in the 71st minute and had two chances to level the match in the closing minutes but one was wide and the other was saved.
"The team did extraordinarily well at maintaining possession for most of the 90 minutes. There were a number of positives but at the end of the day results are results and we didn't get it against a conference rival," Walker said.
Samantha McGuire scored for the Huskies with a long shot that glanced off of Memphis goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel and into the net.
The Tigers hope to rebound in their final home match of the season, against Temple, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. It will be the final home match for four seniors – Emily Adamic, Marissa Duguay, Elysia Masters and Diamond Simpson.
