Memphis and USF Play to 2-2 Draw
Oct 11, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Marie Levasseur and Valerie Sanderson both scored in the draw
Memphis started the match firing on all cylinders and jumped ahead 2-0 before No. 24 USF stormed back in the second half with two goals of their own to send the two teams to overtime where the match finished 2-2 Sunday at Corbett Stadium.
"I think the team responded well and I was proud of them for the way they came out and scored two good goals," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "You have to give credit to South Florida because they came out flying in the second half and I don't think we matched our intensity from the first half. We just have to put together a full 90 minutes together and we can't say we did that today."
Marie Levasseur scored in the eighth minute to break a home scoreless streak by USF. The Bulls had not allowed a goal at home in any of their six matches and had a perfect 6-0 record coming into Sunday.
Less than three minutes later, Levasseur made a defense-splitting pass that set up Valerie Sanderson with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and Sanderson buried the goal to make the score 2-0.
The Tigers held strong defensively throughout the first half and kept USF off the board. Memphis managed to hold off the Bulls for the first 19 minutes of the second half before they got on the board.
USF was able to get their first goal in the 65th minute and then leveled the match 10 minutes later.
Memphis will play its final two home matches of the season next weekend, hosting UConn Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day against Temple Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
