Tigers Drop Thriller To Lipscomb
Sep 19, 2014 | Men's Soccer
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- First half goals by freshman forward Hector Cantele and sophomore midfielder Raul Gonzalez and a second half tally from Gonzalez were not enough for the Memphis men's soccer as they fell to Lipscomb, 4-3 Friday night at the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational.
Cantele opened the scoring for the UofM in the twelfth minute, scoring his second goal of the season, with a 25-yd shot off the crossbar that was deflected off the Lipscomb goalkeeper.
In the 31st minute, Gonzalez dribbled past the backline for an 18 yard shot on goal. The goal was his first of the season.
The Bisons had an answer for the Tigers five minutes later when Anthony Cedano played the ball to Jonathan Ramirez for a 15 yard shot from the right side of the box, leading to their first goal of the match.
Less than 10 minutes later, Lipscomb tied the game, 2-2, when Cedano passed the ball to Josue Chavez from inside the 25 for an 8 yard goal.
The Tigers saw two additional scoring opportunities late in the first half, starting in the 41st minute when Gonzalez's shot on goal was saved and in the 43rd minute when Chandler Gagnon's shot was also saved by the Lipscomb goalkeeper.
The blue and gray came out as the aggressors in the second half of play. Gonzalez netted his second goal of the evening with a 20 yard shot across the left side of the box to the right corner in the 48th minute, giving the Tigers the lead, 3-2.
Ten minutes later, the Bisons respond again. Ramirez played a ball to Matt Kerridge allowing LU to tie the game, 3-3.
Lipscomb took the lead for the first time in the match in the 61st minute, when Ivan Alvarado passed the ball to Chavez for a 10 yard shot from the left side of the box. Shortly after, Memphis tried to answer back with three more shots by Velez, Klipsch and Kauker but couldn't seem to finish.
Uzcategui recorded four saves against the Bisons. Memphis outshot Lipscomb 13-11 for the match, and the two teams recorded a total of 10 yellowcards.
Memphis returns to action Sunday to close out the Lipscomb Invitational. The Tigers play Belmont in a match set for 12:30pm. For the latest updates, follow the Memphis soccer team on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @memphismsoccer.
