Sep 16, 2014 | Men's Golf
The Memphis men's golf team finished off its host tournament this afternoon at the Memphis Intercollegiate in second-place at Colonial Country Club in Memphis. The Tigers shot 289-286-298--873 (+9) over the two day event to finish two-strokes behind winner, Louisiana Tech.
"Overall the week was a success because I believe the guys know where they need to improve," head coach Blake Smart said. "We competed hard and fought until the event was over. I'm proud of the effort the guys put out and we will work on the areas that need improvement over the course of the fall and spring to prepare for a successful postseason run."
Memphis was led by sophomore Eithel McGowen who shot one-under (72-70-73, 215) for the tournament while junior John Luke Tyner (72-71-74, 217 +1), senior Cory Gaylord (73-72-75, 220 +4), junior Florian Loutre (72-73-76, 221 +5) and sophomore Kevin Lee (74-73-77, 224 +8) all finished competitively for the Tigers. Tyner provided the highlight of the tournament with his ace on the 12th hold in the second round for the Blue and Gray. McGowen and Tyner each finished in the top 10 at fourth and sixth, respectively.
Competing as individuals for the tournament were junior Thomas Perrot (79-72-72, 223 +7), freshman Ben Pearson (80-75-71, 226 +10) and freshman Patrick McDonald (79-76-79, 234 +18).
"I would be remiss if I did not give a huge `Thank You' to Colonial Country Club," the first-year head coach said. "The golf course was in fantastic condition and despite heavy rains last week, played beautifully. We are so fortunate to be able to utilize this facility on a regular basis and to be able to welcome teams from around the country to a facility that is first class. The efforts of the staff and supporters of the event are crucial to hosting a high quality golf event."
Ben Wood of Mississippi State was the individual medalist for the tourney with a score of five-under par.
Memphis will be in action again on Monday when it travels to Ohio for the Inverness Golf Club Invitational, hosted by Toledo. To learn more about the team, visit GoTigersGo.com and follow @MemphisMGolf on Twitter.
