Memphis Intercollegiate
Tigers are Leaders in Clubhouse after Second Round
Sep 15, 2014 | Men's Golf
The University of Memphis men's golf team finished in first-place after the opening two rounds at the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club. The Tigers (289-276--575, -1) lead the tournament by a stroke after shooting two-under on the afternoon round.
"We played really consistent golf," first-year head coach Blake Smart said after the second-round. "My high score was a 74. We would've liked to have a little bit more firepower. Having five guys in the game for 36 holes is very rare."
Sophomore Eithel McGowen and junior John Luke Tyner each finished under par. Both were able to shoot par in the first-round, but McGowen finished two strokes under. Tyner, from Collierville, Tenn., managed one of the toughest-feats in sports when he found the pin off the tee on the par-three 12th. The ace helped Tyner finish at one-under par and give the Tigers the lead.
"We're going to need a guy to finish in the 60's and everyone else needs to shoot about the same," Smart said on what the team would need to win the tournament. "I'll be happy with whatever gets the job done."
