Oct 06, 2014 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Memphis Tigers men's soccer team travels to Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday for a conference match up against the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday at Westcott Field.
The blue and gray created several scoring opportunities in the match's final 18 minutes, but was unable to get the equalizer and fell to Connecticut 1-0 in the Tigers American Athletic Conference home opener at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex Saturday.
With the loss, Memphis fell to 0-1-1 in conference play, 5-3-2 overall. They will be looking for their first conference win this season against SMU.
Southern Methodist University is 1-0-1 in conference play, defeating Tulsa, 4-2 and tying UCF, 1-1 in double overtime and has an overall record of 5-3-1.
SMU returns 12 letterwinners and welcomes 10 newcomers to their 2014 squad. Seniors Damian Rosales and Andrew Morales and junior Jacob Speed were named to College Sports Madness All-American Athletic Conference Preaseason Teams.
The Mustangs lead the all-time series against the Tigers 8-3, dating back 1982. Wednesday will be the 12th meeting between the two teams. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2013, when Memphis defeated SMU, 3-2, on their home turf.
"Another tough conference game... I think SMU is disappointed in the way they finished last year off and they are a totally different team this year," said Head Coach Richard Mulrooney. "We saw them at the SMU tournament earlier this year and played a tough southwest game that Friday night and obviously we played that Sunday so we got to see them in person a little bit. They are more competitive; individually they are doing better as well. Quite frankly, anytime you play SMU at SMU it's a tough game. We've got to be focused and just cut down on our individual mistakes. I think if we play the way we did for the most part Saturday night, it gives us a chance to win the game. Obviously we want the result to be a little different, but it's a game that I feel confident going into it but don't take it for granted."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday night at Westcott Field.
