SAN DIEGO - - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (6-5) did not have much time to celebrate its win at No. 38 San Diego Thursday night, waking up Friday morning to face a No. 20 Drake team that had won 16 straight matches. The Bulldogs made it 17 straight victories with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers in the semifinals of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic, Friday morning.
The two teams split the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, with the Tigers picking up an 8-2 win at No. 2 to offset the 8-1 loss at No. 3. The match at No. 1 looked like it was going to go the Bulldogs way, with Drake's No. 1 team up 7-1 on the Tigers, but Cedric de Zutter and Connor Glennon stormed back to force a tiebreak. Unfortunately, the Tigers came up short, 9-8 (7) to put Drake up 1-0.
James McKie then made it 2-0 Drake with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Joe Salisbury. Robin Goodman stretched the Drake lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lukas Vrnak before Johnny Grimal got the Tigers on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
But Connor Glennon, who had dropped the first set, 6-3, before bouncing back to win the second set, 6-2, came up short in the third set, with No. 50 ranked Anis Ghorbel picking up the 6-3 third set win to seal the 4-1 Bulldogs' victory.
The Tigers will play in the third/fourth place match against either San Diego State or Harvard, Saturday at 10 a.m. at San Diego State University.
