Memphis Drops Heartbreaker to No. 19 Arizona State, 4-3

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The University of Memphis men's tennis team battled No. 19 Arizona State down to the wire but ultimately fell 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in the third-place match of the UTR College Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Memphis opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Bor Artnak/Jelani Sarr defeated Moritz Kudernatsch/Maxime Dubouch 6-4 on court one, while Obrad Markovski/Marko Milosavljevic earned a 6-3 victory over Ofek Shimanov/Milos Mikovic on court three. Memphis picked up a doubles win on court two as Sam Reeve/Lasse Rensing defeated Roi Ginat and Niels Villard 7-5, as the Tigers claimed the opening point and a 1-0 lead.
Arizona State got on the board early in singles play, taking victories on the top two courts. No. 116 Bor Artnak defeated Moritz Kudernatsch 6-2, 6-3 on court one before Ofek Shimanov topped Maxime Dubouch 6-2, 6-4 on court two to give the Sun Devils a 2-1 advantage after Memphis claimed the doubles point. Roi Ginat then defeated Lasse Rensing 7-5, 6-4 on court six to keep Arizona State in front before Memphis mounted a late push. Obrad Markovski rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Jelani Sarr 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court three, and Leandro Zgraggen fought off match points and claimed a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Milos Mikovic on court four to even the match at 3-3. The deciding point came on court five, where Niels Villard edged Marko Milosavljevic in a third-set tiebreak to seal the 4-3 win for Arizona State.
Memphis falls to 7-9 and will travel to Ithaca, New York for their next match against No. 31 Cornell. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
