MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis volleyball (12-13, 4-7 the American) welcomed American Athletic Conference frontrunner Louisville (16-7, 11-0 the American) to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon and were felled 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-11).
The first set started off with three quick points for the Cardinals, but the Tigers remained close until the middle of the set when the Cardinals went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 22-10. The Tigers counted with a 6-2 run but it proved to be too late as the Cardinals finished off the set 25-16.
The second set remained close throughout, with seven ties and three lead changes. Back-to-back kills from junior Lauren Hawkins gave the Tigers a 10-6 lead, they held the lead until the score was tied up at 17-17. The Cardinals took the lead 18-17 and went on to take the set 25-20.
Coming out of the break and into the third set the Cardinals jumped out to a lead after the teams traded points to 3-3 to start the set. Louisville used a 9-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 20-7 lead, the Tigers rallied off four late points but the Cardinals took the set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Sophomore Sydni Etheredge and Hawkins led the Tigers with nine kills each. Veronica Zimmerman had 30 assists and seven digs, snapping her five-game streak of double-doubles.
The loss snaps the Tigers three game home winning streak, dating back to the 3-1 victory over the Rutgers Scarlett Knights Friday, Oct. 18.
Memphis will return to the court Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. when they welcome the Temple Owls to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game will be part of a double header with the Memphis women’s basketball team who start the action on Friday at 4 p.m.
