MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis (6-3-0, 2-0-0 C-USA) raced to a 3-0 half time lead and defeated Southern Miss (3-4-2, 0-2-0 C-USA) 5-2 on Sunday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Southern Miss worked the Memphis defense to the tune of three corner kicks in the first two-and-a-half minutes, but the Lady Tigers cleared out each one to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
Memphis gained the lead in the 17th minute as Diamond Simpson served a cross into the box for Taylor Isenhower. Simpson's cross was finished by Isenhower to the right post resulting in the third goal of the season for the senior. Simpson notched her first career assist on the play.
The Lady Tigers increased the league to 2-0 as Christabel Oduro served a pass to the top of the box for Natalia Gomez-Junco. Playing the ball down the right side, Oduro found Gomez-Junco at the top of the box, and she finished it to the right side. The goal was second for Gomez-Junco while Oduro picked up her fourth assist on the year.
Kylie Davis scored her second goal of the weekend in the 42nd minute to give Memphis a 3-0 lead at the half. Madison Oyerpassed the ball to the top of the box, Southern Miss deflected the pass to Davis who then finished it with a goal inside the right post. The goal was the fifth of the season for Davis and the second assist on the year for Oyer.
Oduro found her way into the scoring column quickly after the half time break. Isenhower received a cross from the right side and put a header on frame, but Oduro found the ball after the punched out save and finished it for her sixth goal of the season.
Southern Miss answered with a goal by Tricia Tillman, but Oduro scored her second of the game to help Memphis regain the four goal lead. Oduro gathered a pass from Davis in the box and put the goal past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper. The goal for Oduro was the seventh of the season and 26th of her career. With two goals and an assist on the game, Oduro moves one point shy of fifth all-time with six career points.
The Golden Eagles added a goal in the 75th minute to set the score at 5-2. Southern Miss ended a six-game streak without scoring against the Lady Tigers with the goal in the 51st minute. The streak was ended at 605:20. Memphis improves to 91-6-2 all-time when scoring three-plus goals, 71-3-2 under head coach Brooks Monaghan.
Memphis finished with a 23-9 shots advantage and held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Christa Stricklandmade two saves on the game and improves to 5-1-0 on the season. Lindsey Schwaner made four saves for Southern Miss in the loss.
The Lady Tigers host East Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. and Marshall on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out a six-game home stand.
