Memphis at College of Charleston 
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Playing their final match of the Courtyard Charleston North Classic, the University of Memphis volleyball team faced host College of Charleston. The Tigers started fast, but couldn't keep the momentum, dropping the first two sets by the same score of 25-22. Memphis then forced a fourth set, but ran out of gas as the fell 3-1 to the home standing Cougars.
The Memphis (1-6) offense came out firing early behind the serve of
Aleksandra Petronijevic.
Marija Jovanovic recorded a kill to start the match and Petronijevic added an ace on the 5-0 Tiger run to start the match. Memphis then held off College of Charleston (3-2) until the Cougars tied the set at 18-18, and took the lead at 19-18, forcing a Memphis timeout. The Tigers came back to tie the set at 20 on
Maja Kostic kill, but the Memphis couldn't get any closer than 23-22 as the College of Charleston took the set 25-22.
Memphis played from behind most of the second set, and finally squared the score at 15 on one of
Altrese Hawkins' nine kills in the set. Just as in the first set, the score was tied at 20 before the Cougars went on a run. They scored five of the final seven points to take the set 25-22.
Just as Memphis did to start the match, they started with a 5-0 lead in the third set behind the serving of Petronijevic. The lead swelled to 7-1 on a Hawkins kill before the Cougars called timeout. College of Charleston fought back and tied the set at 15 and took a 17-16 lead before the Tigers went on a run. Hawkins started the 5-0 Memphis run with a kill and followed it with an ace. Jovanovic ended the spurt with consecutive kills, giving Memphis a 21-17 lead. The Cougars scored a few points before
Jaden Louie gave Memphis the 25-20 win with one of her four kills in the match.
College of Charleston started the fourth set on a roll, and quickly gained a 13-6 advantage. The Tigers gradually worked their way back into the set and cut the deficit to 18-17 on a Cougar attack error. The lead grew back to four points, at 23-19 before Kostic sparked a Tiger rally. Louie accounted for a kill, and
Viktorija Teivane served up an ace to pull Memphis within one. Kostic tied the set at 23 with another kill to give the Tigers hope. However, the Cougars scored the last two points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Hawkins led the Tigers with 21 kills to go along with 17 kills for her second double-double of the day. Petronijevic led four Memphis players in double figures with 25 digs. Kostic and Jovanovic also reached double figures in kills with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Louie dished out 41 assists and recorded 11 digs for her first career double-double. Jovanovic and
Lauren Hawkins both recorded four block assists while
Katie Meyer chipped in with three block assists.
Kostic and Petronijevic were both named to the all-tournament team.
Memphis will be in action again on Friday when the play the University of Toledo at the Rocket Classic in Toledo, Ohio. The match is scheduled to start 6:00 p.m. central time.
