MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After posting four top-five finishes last fall, including a tournament title at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, the No. 38 University of Memphis golf team is set to open its spring schedule Feb. 11-12 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
Hosted by the University of Florida, the Gator Invitational is known as one of the toughest collegiate fields each year. Six top-25 teams are in this year's 14-team field: No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Auburn, No. 7 North Florida, No. 20 Florida State, and No. 22 UCF. Florida, Kennesaw State, Liberty and UAB are all receiving votes in the latest Golfweek poll.
The field also features individual prowess with five golfers ranked in the top-20 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index: FSU's Brooks Koepka (5), UNF's Sean Dale (7), Alabama's Justin Thomas (11), Florida's T.J. Vogel (13), and Auburn's Domonic Bozzelli (18).
Competing this week for the Tigers will be Jonathan Fly, Jack Belote, Steve Lee, Grant Milner and Arkansas-transfer Will Pearson, who will be playing in his first event as a Tiger. Belote posted the low individual finish for the Tigers last fall, firing rounds of 69-70-72 to finish second in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
Play begins Saturday Feb. 11 with 36 holes of competition and concludes with the final 18 on Sunday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course (6,704 yards; par 70) on campus at the University of Florida. Play will begin each day at approximately 8 a.m. and live scoring will be available via www.golfstat.com.
The Gators have dominated their home event in the past, winning 24 team titles and 11 individual championships in its 31-year history. Former medalists of the event include PGA TOUR pros Brad Faxon (1983), Chris DiMarco (1990), Paul Azinger (1981), David Toms (1989) and Graeme McDowell (2002).
