Lauren Hawkins gave Memphis an 8-4 lead early in the first set with one of her seven kills of the match. However, East Carolina (1-24, 0-14 C-USA) answered with a 7-1 run to take an 11-9 lead. The Tigers came back and tied the set at 19, but the Pirates scored six of the final seven points for the 25-20 win.
Memphis rebounded in the second set behind Jovanovic, who tallied six kills in the frame. She started a 5-0 run that gave the Tigers a commanding 21-12 lead as Memphis went on to take the set 25-15. The Tigers hit a blistering .429 in the set with 14 kills against only two errors to even the match at one.
Memphis (11-18, 6-8 C-USA) quickly jumped ahead 4-0 in the third set behind kills by Veronica Zimmerman and Jovanovic. East Carolina cut the deficit to 8-7 before Kostic sparked another 4-0 spurt with one of her six kills in the set. The run was capped by another Jovanovic kill, giving Memphis a 12-7 lead. Kostic put the Tigers up 24-17 with another kill before the Pirates got hot. East Carolina scored five straight points, but Kostic ended the set with another kill.
The Pirates didn't go away easily, grabbing an early 9-2 lead in the fourth set. Jovanovic and Zimmerman hammered home consecutive kills to cut the deficit to five. Following a Pirate point, Lauren Hawkins and Viktorija Teivane registered back-to-back kills to start a Memphis run. Jovanovic served an ace to pull Memphis within 10-9, and Memphis tied the set 12 when Zimmerman and Sydni Etheredge teamed up for a block. Altrese Hawkins followed with a kill, giving Memphis a lead they would not relinquish. Kostic ended the 25-21 fourth set win with her 12th kill of the match, giving Memphis the 3-1 win on senior day.
In their final home match, Jovanovic, Kostic and Altrese Hawkins led the Tiger offense. Jovanovic tallied 18 kills and moved into sole possession of 10th place in school history with 1,269 career kills while Kostic followed with 12 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Altrese Hawkins rounded out the group with 11 kills. Aleksandra Petronijevic reached the 20-dig plateau for the third straight match with team-high 26 digs. Zimmerman also recorded a double-double, going for 49 assists and 10 digs.
The Tigers close regular season play next weekend when they travel to Southern Miss and UCF. Memphis faces Southern Miss on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and UCF on Sunday afternoon.
