BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following their tough five set loss to UAB on Friday night, the University of Memphis volleyball team tried to payback the Blazers on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham. It looked as though the teams were in for another five set match after UAB took the first set 25-19 and the Tigers answered with a 26-24 second set victory. However, the Blazers made sure that didn't happen, taking the third set 25-12 and the fourth set 25-19 for the 3-1 victory.
UAB (9-11, 3-3 C-USA) started the match where they left off on Friday, quickly opening up a 5-1 lead. Marija Jovanovic recorded a kill to pull Memphis back within two at 5-3, and back-to-back kills by Altrese Hawkins and Katie Meyer made the score 9-7 in favor of UAB. Leading 11-9, the Blazers began to pull away, scoring five of the next eight points to open up a 16-12 lead. The Tiger deficit grew to six after consecutive service aces by Becca Howard as the Blazers took the set 25-19.
The Tigers (6-14, 1-5 C-USA) turned the tide in the second set as Lauren Hawkins started a 4-0 Memphis run with a kill. Maja Kostic capped the run, giving Memphis a 5-2 lead with one of her 12 kills in the match. However, UAB came back with a 6-0 run later in the set to take a 13-9 lead. Memphis gradually came back and finally evened the score at 15. From that point, the rest of the set was played within a two point spread. The Blazers held a 20-18 lead before Altrese Hawkins hammered home a kill and Lauren Hawkins served up an ace to tie the score. The score was again tied at 24 before Kostic drilled home another kill and Jovanovic gave the Tigers the set with an ace.
