MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The Memphis women's soccer team suffered its second-straight loss of the season Thursday night as the Tigers fell 2-0 to Rice at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Memphis (9-5-0, 5-2-0) was held to nine shots on the evening, five of which came in the final ten minutes, as Rice (8-5-3, 5-1-1) took a lead early on and never looked back. Rice totaled 14 shots on the night, eight on goal.

The loss marked the first time since Sept. 8, 2007 that Memphis lost back-to-back games and the first time since Oct. 15, 2006 since the team suffered back-to-back conference defeats, falling to Colorado College and UTEP. The loss was also Memphis' first regular season shutout since Sept. 17, 2010 when the Tigers fell to TCU, 3-0.

In the first half, Strickland saved Memphis in the 16th minute, diving on the ball before Rice's Lauren Hughes could tap it in. A minute later, Rice took a 1-0 lead with a kick by Hughes from eight yards out through the upper middle of the net. Taylor Isenhower had Memphis' only shot of the half in the 22nd minute off a kick from the left side that went right into the arms of Rice goalie Amy Czyz. At the half, the Owls had 10 shots (five on goal) to Memphis' one.

Rice extended its lead in the 48th minute with a goal by Gabriela Iribarne that sailed into the far left side of the goal, and past the outstretched hands of Strickland for a 2-0 Rice lead.

Alex Craig attacked for the Tigers in the 62nd minute, sending a shot wide left to keep the score 2-0. In the 66th minute, Kelly Gravlin had the Tigers' third shot of the game, sending a header just wide. Memphis continued to look for hope late in the game as Craig had her second shot of the game in the 76th minute, sending the ball wide right. With time winding down, the Tigers fired off five shots in the final minutes, but were unable to get one across.

The Tigers will play their final home game of the season on Sunday against Houston at 1 p.m. with seniors Bailey Pembroke, Taylor Isenhower, Christie Kline and Averi Hallman being recognized in their final home game at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
