MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Tigers took a 1-0 lead with a convincing doubles sweep, and with singles action split evenly, that early point would the deciding factor, lifting the University of Memphis (14-8, 3-3 C-USA) past Middle Tennessee (9-12) in a 4-3 decision on Sunday in a neutral site match at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.
It was the second time the programs met in the past nine days, and the contest began with strong outings from all three Tiger tandems.
Jordan Smith and David Henry defeated Ben Davis and Shaun Waters 8-7 (7-4) on court one, David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury upended Kyle Wishing and Elliot Barnwell 8-4 at the second slot, and Leon Nasemann and John Taylor downed Matt Langley and Dimitri Pippos 8-5 at the third position.
Singles action would prove to be a tougher feat, as MTSU would take individual matches by Davis, Pippos and Barnwell at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions respectively, but victories from O'Hare at No. 1 (def. Shaun Waters (MTSU) 6-2, 7-5), John Taylor at No. 6 (def. Kyle Wishing (MTSU) 6-2, 6-0) evened the dual at 3-3.
Freshman Johnny Grimal would use a pivotal third set to clinch the team win at No. 3 singles (def. Matt Langley (MTSU) 7-6, 2-6, 6-2).
The Tigers will be back at it again tomorrow, Monday, April 11 against North Florida in a match slated for 10 a.m. CT.
